What is boundary wall

A compound wall is a structure built around a property’s perimeter to demarcate its boundaries and provide security and privacy. Typically constructed using materials like bricks, concrete, or stones, compound walls vary in height and design based on local regulations and the property owner’s preferences. These walls serve as the first line of defense against intruders and provide a sense of enclosure for the property. Additionally, they can enhance the aesthetic appeal of the property while offering protection from noise, dust, and other external elements. Overall, compound walls play a vital role in defining and securing properties in residential, commercial, and industrial settings.

Height of the boundary wall

In your locality, compound wall regulations are guided by local building codes and municipal rules, which determine their permissible height. Serving as a vital boundary marker between properties, compound walls offer initial security against intruders while delineating property lines.

Compound wall height as per NBC

The National Building Code (NBC) in India typically allows for compound walls ranging from 1.5 to 2.4 meters in height, measured from the centerline of the front street, with special permission from local authorities. Residents may opt for additional security features like MS-Grill, barbed wire mesh, or electric fences atop the walls, subject to approval.

While industry practice suggests a thickness of 230 mm to 400 mm, an ideal thickness of 300 mm is recommended. Striking a balance between security and aesthetics, compound walls should ideally not obstruct natural light, aligning with Vastu Shastra principles. They should also never surpass the height of the associated building to maintain visual harmony and regulatory compliance.
